On the domestic front, markets are awaiting Canada’s first-quarter GDP figures, due Friday, for a clearer picture of the economy’s performance. Meanwhile, traders remain divided on whether the Bank of Canada will deliver another rate cut next week. The latest CPI report showed headline inflation fell mainly due to a carbon tax cut, but core inflation, which the BoC watches closely, rose.

Bank of Montreal shares surged close to 3% after beating their earnings expectations for the second fiscal quarter.
